Oh The Agony!

It’s been a while I know – life happens people.

I must say – the past few weeks have been pretty crazy/painful.

I went to the chiropractor yesterday for shoulder pain. It’s been hurting for a while now and this past weekend it caught at least five or six times. Enough that once I wanted to just cry. I apparently have rotator cuff tendon issues. I had some ultrasound therapy done on it yesterday and he told me to ice it twice a day and if it still hurt by the end of the week I would need to come back and see him.

Obviously I looked up what exactly a rotator cuff is and the surgery (if it is determined that I need it) and apparently surgery is pretty painful. Awesome. If the pain continues after I’ve seen the chiropractor a few times he said that he was going to send me for an MRI. Then we would go from there. PRAY that I do not need surgery – cause that would suck.

Next up – Female Issues

TMI ahead guys…

I got back on my birth control that I was on before – NuvaRing – and I love it. Downside – you start it on the first and end it on the 21st. I say downside because with the way my other birth control had been working – my friend came during the middle of the month. So – the first month I used the ring, my friend was about a week late. OMG – most painful week of my life.

I seriously wanted to lay in bed and cry the whole time. I wondered aloud about the possibility of some thing else being wrong – as to why it hurt so bad. I did a search and found this on WebMD: Changes in the color and thickness of menstrual blood are often normal. But there are a number of problems that might cause abnormal clots (which I did notice and it freaked me out, hence the web search) to form in your menstrual blood or lead to the changes in color or thickness during your period. Problems that can cause changes include: Miscarriage. Women who have miscarried may pass blood clots or gray clumps of tissue from the vagina. Fibroids or Hormonal changes are also possibilities.

Need I underline anything else?

I told Jeremy about it but he didn’t seem that all concerned and I didn’t push the issue or the discussion. I also didn’t call my doctor because let’s be honest – they would either say yes I did have a miscarriage and I’d feel horrible because what if I caused it because of the birth control (which is likely if that’s the case) and I’d feel even more worse or they would tell me no and I’d just be an idiot freaking out about nothing.

I haven’t told anyone this – now I’m telling everyone. Do I wonder if that’s what really happened, a miscarriage? Yes. Should I have went to the doctor? Probably. Do I feel better not knowing the truth? Yes. Does that make me a horrible person? Insert answer here _____________.

I’m kind of numb to the whole thing now. I think that’s one reason why I’m glad I don’t know for sure. If I knew and the answer was yes – I’d be a miserable ball of craziness. If the answer was no – I’d figure I was just one of those people who think they are sick all the time….what do you call them? Hypochondriacs?

So – with all that being said and trying to find something to take my mind off it – I am going to throw myself back into running. I have went once these past few weeks (cause it’s been FREEZING down here or raining or snowing) and I’m looking forward to warmer weather. Come this winter – I’ll be getting a gym membership just so I can have a treadmill to run on. Also – I’ve been contemplating joining 9Round – look it up here http://www.9round.com/. I just have to get my membership fees up. Anyone want to donate? 🙂

This is also on my to do list http://pinterest.com/pin/164733298842060021/

Who wants to go with me?

What I Want To Do

I have been putting together a list of races (running) that I want to do this year.

Jeremy wants to do some as well so here’s hoping we can keep each other motivated. Although – with his schedule we won’t be able to run together for a while. Anyway – here goes!

March 23rd – Berry College 10K/5K
March 30th – Color Me Rad 5K
April 20th – Chick. Chase 15K/5K
April 27th – Run For Ringgold 5K
Aug. 17th – Chatt. Mud Run
Nov. 9th – Chick. Half Marathon

If I can only do ONE race this year – it would be the Color Me Rad run. My second choice would be the Mud Run.

My list is growing and if you are around the Chattanooga area – let me know of races that aren’t on this list and I can add them! Thanks! 🙂

What To Do….

Hey – for once I’m not busy!!!

What should I do with myself? Write a BLOG POST! Duh – it’s been like two weeks since the last one.

So – what’s been going on? Well – SUPER BUSY with my side job – Origami Owl. Christmas orders are seriously two inches thick in a folder in my bag by my feet. That makes me really happy by the way. I’m having a 12 Days Of Christmas Sale starting Thursday – check out my FB page for details on it.

This past Saturday the family (Jeremy, Me and the kiddo’s) went to Red Robin to eat with Casey and Jakki. The manager came over and tapped me on the shoulder and had a card in his hand. He said that another family was doing a random act of kindness and picked our family out to give us a $25 gift card! I cried – for real. I made Jakki cry too – and she was so inspired that SHE bought a $25 gift card for another family that was sitting near us.

Seriously – it was the best day. We got Keira her first Christmas present and I’m working on getting her others this weekend. Seth’s Christmas is already done – Jeremy’s is on the way. I’ve got his mom’s, his step mom’s, my mom’s and his dad’s. We still have a few to do and then we will be done.

Keira has been interested in the Christmas tree – but not a lot till last night. She pulled an ornament off and almost made the tree fall over – we seriously need a new one. She crawled underneath it and sat in the corner until I bribed her out with a stuffed animal. I wasn’t going to crawl under there until I absolutely had to.

I’ve been getting on my own case about not running lately. There is a list of runs I want to do next year. If I don’t get on it – I won’t be able to do them. One is a color run, the other is a “Run From The Police” run. There are several others but those are the only ones I can remember off the top of my head. I’m a sucker for cold weather so that’s one reason why I haven’t been running. I need some gear for this weather – I have NONE.

I follow a blog called Run, Hemingway, Run….he’s doing a challenge of 2,013 miles in 2013. I might just join in on that. Of course that works out to about 38 MILES A WEEK – 5 MILES A DAY. OMG….I doubt I will hit it – seriously – but I can try right? 🙂

Map My Rear End!

Seriously? Can’t I find ONE running app that WORKS?!

Strava hasn’t worked for me in a while. I’ve been using it just to keep time and then I’ve been TRYING to put my runs into Map My Run and then logging the time but Map My Run says “Welcome Jane” then won’t let me do anything! Grrrr!

It’s so frustrating because I’m OCD on just about everything and I want to know my time, my pace, my distance and I want it all to be RIGHT. With Map My Run it would be right but if I can’t log in what good does it do me?!?!

I’ve had a Nike+ band but it was never right either. Anyone want to buy it? 🙂 When I started up running again I used Strava and it worked for a good while and I was SUPER happy. It may just be my phone though cause Jeremy’s Strava app works great. He has a HTC something or other and mines a Samsung Galaxy. We’ve talked about getting him a new phone and me having his old one. We just haven’t gotten around to the AT&T store just yet.

Anybody, please, please please let me know what running app works for you! I don’t have an iPhone (although I’d die for one) so what ever app it is has to be available in the Android market. Thanks guys!!

OH!! Our run is in 13 DAYS!!!! Wish us luck!

3.8 Miles…

That’s what my phone said that I did yesterday. It’s at least kind of right. Let me explain….

Strava showed that my run was all over the place, like I was getting chased by a bee. All jagged and crazy looking instead of a straight line like it should have been. Ugh.

I was so happy with Strava and now….I can’t trust it. Maybe it’s just my phone. I have a Samsung Galaxy S and my husband has an HTC something or other. His works GREAT even in cloudy weather. He’s thinking of buying a new phone and giving me his old one. Which is totally fine with me.

So now….I am using MapMyRun.com to map it and figure out my pace. Anyone else have any problems with Strava? I am wondering if I should invest in a GPS watch or if it makes sense to do that. If I have problems with my phone in cloudy weather woulnd’t the watch have problems too?

Using Map My Run I – mapped my run. 🙂 It said 3.11 miles and I did it in 40:09. So that means my pace was 12:54. I don’t think that was too bad. I would walk for five minutes and run for two minutes. Starting next week I am going to walk four minutes and run two minutes.

Jeremy and I have the Susan G Komen Race For The Cure 5k on the 30th of this month. I told him that I just want to finish in front of one person. Which hopefully I will going at this rate!

New PR’s – Maybe??

So since it rained on Monday I didn’t get to go for a run until Wednesday. That’s the night that we go to church. Which means I usually go run before I get the kids and then meet Jeremy at his dad’s house cause they watch Keira while we go to church.

Well – that’s not what happened on Wednesday. Since we live 30+ minutes away from our church Jeremy wanted me to come pick him up. My car gets better gas mileage than his truck – so I said sure. I changed clothes at work, went and picked up Seth (which is back in school now 15 minutes from where I work) then went on to the house (15+ minutes from the school away from where I work) and did some house cleaning before Jeremy got home. After we all piled in the car we went to get Keira from daycare (closer to my work and Jeremy’s parents) – and then headed to get something for dinner THEN to Jeremy’s parents house.

If you’re wondering why we picked Keira up last – you try doing laundry and dishes and cleaning house while a 9 1/2 month old is clinging to your legs or wanting you to hold her or cry cause you aren’t holding her. Yeah – it felt weird being at home and her not there.

Finally – once at Jeremy’s parents house we dropped the kiddos off and headed for the park. It was about 6:30 by the time we got there. Remember – we have a 5K to run in 22 days (as of today) so we need to get in as much running as we can. We walked for a minute and stretched our muscles and then started off. I turned on my Strava after we were done stretching and didn’t touch it the whole time. I also used the band that Jeremy bought for me.

Long run short – we did 2.5 miles according to my Strava and I had a pace of 12:29 BUT Jeremy’s phone (which is different from mine and in a Otterbox case) says that he did 2.1 miles and had a pace of 15:06. WTHeck?!? When we look at the GPS mapping of the route we took his is more smooth and mines all over the place. His also says that we started and stopped at the same place and mine says we didn’t (but we kind of did so it should at least be close but it’s not).

Does that mean that all my mileage and times are wrong?! Could it have been from the arm band covering up my phone that interfered with the GPS signal? I don’t know. I was mad!!! Then Jeremy said this after we looked at all my other runs and saw that they were kind of off too “At least your phone has been consistently wrong which means you have been improving.” Huh?

He meant that since my phone hasn’t been exactly recording, but I’ve been using the same phone, the PR’s I got on the run for Wednesday are still improvements. See what I’m saying? Here are my PR’s from Wednesday:
400m         1:37
1/2 Mile     4:43
1K               6:30
1 Mile        11:07
2 Miles      24:35

Those are a little better than my 2nd place times so maybe Jeremy is right. I don’t know. Maybe I will use some of the extra money I earn from my new venture to buy myself one of those GPS watches. Maybe that will be better than my phone!

What do you use to keep up with your runs?

I wasn’t running….

Stupid weather!

Ugh – yesterday before work was over I changed into my running gear. Which means I slipped into my new Danskin knee-length leggings, a new sports bra and a bright pink tank from American Eagle plus my New Balance shoes. I looked AWESOME if I do say so myself!

The only downer…as soon as I got into the car and started heading for the park – all kinds of nasty black clouds descended and it rained the rest of the day. DARN IT! I so need a gym membership where they have treadmills. Looking into it this week. I may sound weak and prissy but I can’t stand to run in the rain. Is it just me? Also – running in the rain and getting into my car with leather seats soaking wet probably isn’t a good idea. Oh – and my husband would kill me. Just sayin’.

I brought everything to run again today and it’s looking prettier so cross your fingers and pray that it doesn’t rain today. I really really NEED to run today. Like – it’s only been a month since I started running but when I miss a run it kills me. It feels like I don’t have a good day if I don’t go run. I feel like I eat worse (but I don’t I promise) and I feel – well – fat. I’ve lost about 4 pounds and have kept it off but I have 21 pounds left to go.

I found a small “express” gym in town, close to work and the daycare for Keira that only costs $15.99 a month with no contract AND it’s open 24/7. It has no daycare, no pool, no court for basketball or anything but like I need that! Keira is in daycare and Seth is back in school so I could go before I go and get them. I am going to call later and ask what kind of equipment they have. I think they even have trainers on site 24/7 which is awesome.

Wish me luck for today – oh – and I have the opportunity to get in on something new so I will let you know if that pans out. I’ll give you a hint – it’s girly and shiny. 🙂

I hate you.

Yes. I said hate.

I hate that you get under my skin and make me feel like I want to chop my foot off. I hate your mouth and the crap that you do with it. It’s ridiculous that you are so annoying….I don’t see how anyone can stand you AT ALL. You drive me insane.

OH EM GEE!! I went to the lake this weekend with Jeremy’s family and rode the jet ski and just hung out. It was all good until me and Hunter (Jeremy’s step niece) decided to go on a walk. Never wear flip-flops to go for a walk in the woods by a lake. Wear actual shoes and jeans. I had flip-flops and jeans on but my jeans were rolled up so that they didn’t drag.

On the way back to camp is when I started itching. It’s horrible. I didn’t take a picture cause I want to spare you the horrible image. I counted the bites on my feet alone – 34. Just on my FEET. THIRTY FOUR. Do I need to say it again? 34!!!

Never in my life have I ever itched so bad!! I’ve tried everything – clear fingernail polish and even Neosporin with pain. Neither one really works but when the fingernail polish burns it stops itching for a while – so that’s good right? Probably not. Either way – I looked them up. You can see what I found here. Oh – try searching for “chiggers” under images. That’s exactly what I look like from my ankles down.

I have on tall socks and my running shoes today….maybe it was a bad idea. I have resisted the urge to itch but they still bother me with the socks and the shoes rubbing against everything. I had planned on running today – and I still plan to but I doubt I will enjoy it today with my feet bothering me so much. We have 26 days until our first 5K (Jeremy and I). So I need to be on my game as much as I can and having a three-day holiday weekend with no running has me behind. Wish me luck today as I go running.

My Stats

On Friday the 10th of this month I started running again. I was nervous, scared and excited.

I have mentioned this before but I have an app on my phone I use for running. It’s called Strava. You should check it out. I like it a lot better than I liked my Nike + band (which I plan on selling at some point).

That Friday I went to a nature park to run. I hate road running, it aggravates my hurt knee more than trail running does. I had never been to this park, had never even heard of it until a few months before. I got there and it was sun shinning, maybe low 90’s and no clouds. I got about a half mile into the woods and it started POURING. So I turned and went back to the car. I wasn’t going to do much that day anyway BUT my phone decided to freeze and it didn’t save my run. I had to manually put it in Strava’s website so it didn’t calculate my pace, calories or anything. Bummer.

On the 13th I didn’t go running because I forgot all my gear (my shoes mainly). You can’t really run in flip-flops. On the 15th (Wednesday) I did go. I went to a park near my work and ran their paved track just to see if it would really aggravate me like it used to. It wasn’t so bad but this day I forgot my phone. I haven’t manually put it in Strava yet – cause well – I kind of forgot. I was so pissed I forgot my phone. It felt like I lost an arm or something that day.

Now on the 17th I did go running and I remembered my phone, my shoes and my change of clothes! Go me! I went to a trail I had seen before but never been down. It looked really pretty. That’s my Instagram feed, in case you didn’t know. 🙂
So – my phone actually recorded that run which I call Battlefield 2. It’s the second trail I’ve ever run there.
1.9 Miles
34 feet in elevation climbed
25:33 Moving time
13:39/mile Average Pace
265 Calories Burned
Dude – 13:39 a mile. I thought it was alright. Not amazeballs but good for the fourth time out right?

I don’t run on the weekends…too many kids to look after and things to do. So on Monday I went out again to a different trail. I call it Battlefield 3. New trail and new area. Half of this was part of a still used but old paved service road for the battlefield.
2.4 Miles
0 feet in elevation climbed (HA! could have fooled me)
34:29 Moving time
14:33/mile Average Pace
331 Calories Burned
This day my calf muscles were KILLING me and so were my ankles. I had to stop and pause the app several times to stretch them out. No wonder my pace was slower. I was so mad at myself for the slower pace.

Then this past Wednesday (the 22nd) I went out again to Battlefield 2. It was cooler which was nice. On the way back to the car I had to stop and pause the app because there were two deer in the way. They thought I was interesting I guess. They stopped and stared at me for a good three minutes and one even tried getting a bit closer (I was about 50-60 yards away). Then they went on about their business.
2.2 Miles
41 feet in elevation climbed
31:53 Moving time
14:12/mile Average Pace
315 Calories Burned
Still slower than the 13:39 pace….still aggravated with myself BUT…..

I have set a few PR’s since I have been using this app.
PR for 1 mile time:   13:23
PR for 400m:             2:36

I don’t know how well that stacks up to other people but I am pretty proud of myself. I’ve been at this for two weeks and I’ve lost three pounds and I bought new jeans Wednesday and they were sevens….SEVENS. I haven’t seen that size since a few months before I got pregnant with Keira (in March 2011).

I don’t follow anyone on Strava and no one is following me. If you are a runner I highly recommend this app and if you do download it – follow me! I need encouragement and me talking out loud to myself on my runs works but it’s good to get kudo’s when your done too and post it! Oh – by the way – I am not paid or perked by Strava for this review of their app or any other blog post I’ve mentioned them in. I doubt they even know I and my little blog exist. I am still trying to figure out how to get their widget on here. Hopefully I will figure it out soon so you can keep up with me and keep me accountable. 🙂

What do you guys think of my times? Horrible? Good for a restart after taking a year and half off? Kick butt? I don’t know what to compare it to or anything. An average finishing time for a 5k is under 30 minutes. Obviously I have lots of work to do before my first one at the end of next month!!!!

See Jane Run

There is actually a website called See Jane Run. They basically sell anything for women that has to do with running.

This past Friday was the first time in a LONG time I had went for a run – and this time I went alone – into the woods. My hubby could have killed me. I had my pocket knife – and a cell phone but let’s face it – if something was going to happen to me, it would still happen.

I went to a nature park that ended up being 20 minutes from my work. I thought it would be closer. There were little white puffy clouds and it felt nice, in the 80’s I’d guess. Someone had said that the last time they were at said park that the trails were over grown. I could tell that they had been through there recently to clear them out as you could still see rake marks in the dirt.

I chose the 1.1 mile loop which said it would take an hour to do….if you were walking. I started up my Strava app and took off. I chose to go to the right which ended up being mostly downhill. Not so bad right? Well – I had to dodge rocks, limbs and leaning trees on the way. There was once – right before a wooden bridge – that I thought I was going to trip and seriously injure my face – but I didn’t! 🙂 I looked at Strava a few minutes later and found I had already done .3 miles and was pretty pumped to go the whole way around the loop. I felt good, I wasn’t breathing heavy or anything (which I honestly thought I would be) and then…

It happened.

Out of no where God decided to make it rain. REALLY!?!?! I checked Strava again and I had done a half mile in about 5 minutes. That’s pretty awesome for me since I haven’t been on a run in almost 6 months. That’s when the next thing happened. My phone decided that it was too hot or wet or whatever and froze. I was pissed to say the least.

So – in the pouring rain I decided to turn around and go back the way I came. I told myself “At least you will do a mile today!” Which is more than I can say for any other day. I started back up the trail and boy was I sorry. I mentioned at the beginning of this post that the way I took was mostly downhill, and remember that place where I almost tripped? Serious incline my friend – seriously.

By the time I got back to the top I was dying. Hills are my worst enemy. My legs felt like jello and I had dirt in my shoe and some how one of my socks came half way off from inside my shoe! I sat down on the closest bench I could find under some trees and took the battery out of my phone under my shirt and put it back in. It didn’t record my run – DANG IT! But I figured out the time and it took me about 15 minutes total. Five down and ten back. Good for me.

I love the Strava app on my phone but I really need an arm band. I looked on Amazon and found this one. Not the prettiest thing ever but are they supposed to be? I also thought about getting one of those FitBit things again. Maybe I can put it on my Christmas list. 🙂 Who knows, maybe Jeremy will get one for Christmas too and we can compare our stats.

I am going running again this afternoon after work. Even though I won’t have an app to track my time or distance (cause I forgot my phone today!!!) I still want to go, I probably just won’t go where I was going to go. I do feel naked without my phone and I’d rather run in an open space without one than in the woods without one. I plan on going Wednesday as well. I think I can put a Strava app on my blog – I remember seeing that somewhere. That way – you guys can see that I am actually doing something and motivate me if I get lazy.

I really want to sign up for my first 5k soon. It will give me something to work towards. AND – we might have found a jogging stroller for $50!! Woo hoo! Seth made mention that he wanted to go with me on my runs. I will see if maybe on Saturday’s we can start going in the mornings. Seth loved track at his old school and is really missing it here at his new one.

Wish us luck on our running endeavors! 🙂

**No such luck finding the Strava app for my blog. Sorry folks! I can keep you updated with screen shots though! It will still keep me accountable!
