There’s something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.
Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price’s attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He’s the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.
Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce–and goes out of his way to make that very clear–she can’t let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her.
Dangerously exciting and darkly romantic, Fallen is a page turning thriller and the ultimate love story.
Ultimate love story? I wouldn’t be so sure about that. I mean – isn’t that what they said about Twilight? I hate to even mention Twilight in this post but hey – if the shoe fits. WARNING: Spoilers! If you want to read this book – do not read any further!
So Luce is a preppy high-society-dorm-room-high-school girl who was sentenced to the Sword & Cross Reform School in Savannah for having no explanation why the boy she liked burst into flames at her kiss. They figured she was having a relapse of her psychotic episodes from her youth or something. She sees shadows that come around when she’s in the woods or near water and she had no idea what they are but whenever they are around she feels uneasy.
At Sword & Cross (I didn’t get the name – still don’t) she meets Ariane(?) who wears a tracking bracelet on her wrist. Then there is Gabbe – the very Southern girl who is always hair-done-make-up-on and Luce doesn’t like her. Penn – the only legally sane girl there whose father was the grounds keeper. Then there is Todd – the new guy who keeps to himself; Cam the dark-haired green-eyed boy who openly flirts with Luce and then David. When she first saw him he flipped her off. Yet she is strangely drawn to him and dreams of him almost every night she is there. Basically she is stalks him to find out more. Searching the internet for anything on his family and sneaking in with Penn into the student records.
Oh – I forgot to mention Molly. She dumped meat loaf on Luce’s head the first day she was there and was horrible and mean to her throughout the book. Now – if you’ve read this far I am assuming either you already read the book and are wondering what I think OR you just want to know and then decide if you will actually spend the time to read it. So here goes.
Todd dies in a fire that Miss Sophia, Luce and Penn were in at the library. Only Todd died of a broken neck falling down the stairs escaping. This is when Luce starts to piece together the Daniel puzzle. Soon she realizes Daniel is an angel – a Fallen angel. So is Gabbe, Ariane, Molly and Cam – Miss Sophia too. It happens every seventeen years. Daniel and Luce find each other – they fall in love – he tells her the truth or just kisses her and she bursts into flames. Daniel never dies – he is damned as is she.
After I read the whole book I went back through my head and pieced everything together. Daniel lives forever – Luce doesn’t. Every seventeen years she comes around but this time is different. This time she was raised in a NON religious household and was never saved or baptized. All the other times she was. This is why in THIS life she can see the shadows (although Lauren Kate never says this – maybe in the next book) and can remember things about Daniel even though she’s never seen him before in this life.
From what I understand – Luce is the key to the End of Days. All the past lives Daniel has won – won Luce’s love and her heart – her soul. This time Daniel has to fight harder because basically her soul is up for grabs since she hasn’t been saved or baptized. Oh – Cam is a Demon (working for Satan) and Daniel, Gabbe and Ariane are all Fallen angels but still have an alliance to the man up stairs – God. Anyway – since Luce’s soul is up for grabs – if Cam wins her – it’s the beginning of the End of Days and she dies never to be “reincarnated” again. If Daniel wins – there is no End of Days and he and Luce can be together.
At least – that’s what I got out of the whole book. I could be terribly wrong but I could also be acutely right. We will just have to see I guess. There are three other books in the series – The next one is Torment. Let’s hope that some of the unanswered questions in Fallen are answered there. If not – I’ll be disappointed.
